Drone Stockpile Measurement
Measuring piles by hand is slow, hard to repeat, and puts people on unstable material next to working equipment. BWM Geospatial Solutions measures your stockpiles from the air — accurate volumes for every pile on the yard, captured in a single flight, with nobody climbing anything.
We fly above while your crew keeps working below. No shutdown, no rerouting loaders, no lost production hours.
Why Aerial Measurement Beats Walking the Pile
Ground-based methods depend on where the surveyor walked and how the pile was shaped that day. Two people measuring the same pile can return meaningfully different numbers, and neither can tell you which one was right.
A drone survey captures the entire surface of every pile — tens of thousands of measured points rather than a handful of spot readings. Because we establish a fixed base surface on the first flight and reuse it on every survey afterward, your numbers stay consistent month over month. When inventory moves, you see exactly how much and from which pile.
That consistency is what makes the data useful for reconciliation. A volume you can defend to your accountant is worth considerably more than one you can only estimate.
What We Measure
- Gravel, stone, and aggregate stockpiles
- Sand and soil piles
- Mulch, compost, and bulk organics
- Coal, ore, and mined material
- Feed, fertilizer, and bulk agricultural storage
- Construction material laydown yards
- Waste and recycling volumes
How It Works
1. Site setup. On the first visit we establish ground control and capture a baseline survey, including the true base surface beneath each pile. Every future measurement compares against it.
2. Flight. Our FAA-certified pilots fly the yard while operations continue normally underneath.
3. Processing. Imagery is processed into a 3D surface model of the yard. Each pile is isolated and its volume calculated against the established base surface.
4. Reporting. You receive a timestamped report with volumes per pile, change since the last survey, and the visual model backing the numbers.
Accuracy
Volume accuracy comes down to how completely we can see the pile. With ground control established and full visibility around a pile's toe, aerial measurement is substantially more accurate and far more repeatable than walked measurements or load counts.
Some geometry is inherently harder — steep-sided piles pushed against walls or bin structures, or material stored partially under cover, where the base surface can't be directly observed. We'll assess your yard and tell you up front which piles will measure cleanly and which carry more uncertainty, rather than reporting a single confidence number that doesn't hold for every pile on site.
What You Receive
- Volume report, per pile, timestamped
- Change-in-volume comparison against prior surveys
- 3D surface model of the yard
- Orthomosaic map of the site
- Data exports for your inventory or accounting system
Recurring Surveys
Most clients fly monthly or quarterly, aligned to their reporting cycle. Some fly at every month-end close, others at fiscal year-end only.
Recurring schedules are priced below one-off surveys and lock in the same base surface and processing method every time — which is what makes trend data trustworthy rather than a series of unrelated numbers.
Safety
Traditional pile measurement puts a person on loose material, often on a slope, frequently within the swing radius of active equipment. It's one of the more routine ways people get hurt on an aggregate site.
Aerial measurement removes the exposure entirely. The crew stays on the ground and the survey happens overhead.
Industries
- Quarries and aggregate producers
- Ready-mix and asphalt plants
- Landscape supply yards
- Agricultural bulk storage
- Waste and recycling facilities
- General contractors tracking material on site
- Municipal public works yards
What Drives Cost
Stockpile surveys are quoted per site based on yard size, the number of piles, how much of the site requires ground control, and how often you want us back. Recurring programs are priced per visit below one-off rates, and multi-site operations are quoted together.
Call with your yard size and reporting schedule and we'll give you a number.
